The National Cyber Security Alliance is celebrating National Internet Safety Month this June by encouraging all Internet users to follow three simple steps when connecting to the Web: STOP. THINK. CONNECT. NCSA also encourages every adult to take a few moments to teach a young person about better online safety so that they use good judgment and behavior all-year long.

National Internet Safety Month brings an important opportunity to evaluate our digital behaviors and identify better ways to increase online safety. NCSA research released in November 2011 found that less than half of the U.S. population (46%) reports that they feel safe from viruses, malware and hackers while roughly half (48%) of parents are not...

Alec Ross, senior advisor for innovation at the State Department, has a piece of advice for students tasked with the nerve-rattling dilemma of choosing a college major.

“If any college student asked me what career would most assure thirty years of steady, well-paying employment,” said Ross, “I would respond, ‘cybersecurity.’”

That’s because cybersecurity is a field where the rules of the recession seem flipped: There’s plenty of jobs, but relatively few qualified applicants.

The government needs to hire at...

Note:
For years, I have been working as a public relations professional in what I call Austintonio — the cities of Austin and San Antonio. For the past couple of years, I have been a correspondent with Austin Startup — www.austinstartup.com. This week, I completed an interview with Jason Seats, the managing director of the TechStars Cloud program about the success of the first program, that was posted on this tech portal. My intent was to share the success of the TechStars Cloud program with our northern cousins. Yet, after reading it and having it posted on Austin Startup, I felt it was important to share this with others.

About 2 weeks ago, I was all jazzed up to write my first blog for Infosec Island. I set up my account and knew the topic I was going to write about – cybersecurity legislation.

Before I sat down to put my fingers to the keyboard, I decided to catch up on some reading that I had set aside in my Read It Later app just in case there was some good information for me to use for my blog.

The first one I read was a blog by James Altucher (one of my favorites to read) about procrastination. Needless to say, that may not have been the best thing to read first because what happened next was somehow predicted by that blog.

Life happened and abolished my last 3 weeks – I have hardly even looked at Twitter and...

Story by By Tom Krazit and Jeff Roberts

The U.S. House of Representatives surprised the tech industry Thursday by voting on, and passing, the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA) after having originally scheduled a vote for Friday. The revised bill passed by a vote of 248 to 168, with 206 Republicans voting in favor of the bill and 140 Democrats voting against it. Earlier today, we published this FAQ, which examines the issues surrounding the bill and its potential impact on the technology and media industries.

Proponents of the bill have framed it as an “information sharing”...
